Here it is, the true sign that spring has sprung on Des Moines, the first day of the Farmer’s Market Season. I expect to see a great crowd down on Court Avenue sampling some local food and (mostly) local produce.
Many of the items you see the first month or so of the market aren’t quite in season yet, so vendors go through such places as Loffredo’s Produce and Cysco Fresh Express. Look for the commercial produce cases beneath the tables. Now, this isn’t a terrible thing, but educate youselves as to what is really being grown and sold and what is being picked up at “will call” the sold under the guise of local produce. One good source is the Downtown Farmers Market web site itself. They have a little page showing what is in season and when you should expect said items to appear on vendors’ tables.
Again, just a warning, not a slag on the vendors. I really would like to see all of you educate yourselves and be better Locavores!
Cheers until Sunday,
